Dazu Rock Carvings
Dazu Rock Carvings is the generic name for the Buddhist cliff inscriptions (grottoes) located in Dazu County, Chongqing. As one of the eight greatest grottoes in the world, Dazu rock Carvings are recognized as a World Culture Heritage Site.
There are over 50,000 religious stone statues scattered among its 75 groups of carvings, with a total of 100,000 figurines and over 100,000 inscribed characters of text. The carvings at Baoding Mountain and Beishan Mountain, mainly composed of Buddhist statues, are outstanding and regarded as perfect examples of carving craftsmanship from late Imperial China. The Dazu Rock Carvings are the embodiment of the excellent craftsmanship and artistic creativity of ancient Han Chinese laborers, and enjoys equal popularity with the four greatest grottoes in China, namely the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, Yungang Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes and the Maijishan Grottoes. The magnificent scale, exquisite art, rich diversity of subjects and well-preserved condition of this complex of grottoes make it a rare site in the world. Many political leaders and celebrities both from home and abroad have marveled at its beauty. It is one of the must-see scenic spots for Chinese and foreign tourists travelling in the Sichuan, Chongqing area.
